Dear Moore Catholic Family,
It is with great pleasure that I share with you the latest administrative changes and events at Moore Catholic. Ann Marie Henderson ‘75, was named Chair of the Board of Trustees. She is committed to Moore Catholic’s mission to provide a quality Catholic education for our students, and has been working tirelessly to ensure a successful future for our school.
In June, Dr. Joseph Fusco officially retired from his position as Principal of Moore Catholic High School. Mrs. Gina DeSantis, a former science teacher at Moore ’00-’03, was selected to replace him. Mrs. DeSantis is a highly regarded educator, and former Science Department Chair at Notre Dame Academy; we are confident that she will lead Moore Catholic into a brighter future. Mrs. Rose Walsh ’98 will begin her second year as Vice Principal, replacing Mrs. Amy Panfilo who retired after 47 dedicated years of loving service to students, staff, and faculty.
The Annual Golf Outing and Dinner was a huge success; over $20,000 was raised, and there were alumni from every decade. More than 70 golfers enjoyed a day of friendly competition at the Grand Oaks Country Club. And in the evening, the event’s Guest of Honor Monsignor Thomas J. Bergin, spoke about his wonderful memories at Moore.
The Amelia Panfilo Scholarship Fund has been established at the behest of a generous benefactor who has promised to match dollar for dollar, Annual Fund contributions up to $100,000. This fund will assist high-achieving students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to benefit from a Moore Catholic High School education. The 2016-2017 Annual Fund will begin immediately.
We have a commitment from the Archdiocese of New York for a multi-year capital-improvement plan approved by Cardinal Timothy Dolan. This support demonstrates confidence in the future vision of Moore Catholic.
Our Development team is comprised of faculty, staff, and administrators who are working to secure funding for capital improvements. We received a grant from an anonymous donor for $80,000 to upgrade the heating system and install a new public address system. New security cameras have been installed, and the interior and exterior lighting throughout the campus will be upgraded through grants.
Our Performing Arts Program is thriving, with an amazing director and cast of talented students. Our students were given special recognition at this year’s Minty Awards in June. We received a grant from the Borough President’s office to have the stage floor refinished and new lighting installed.
The Athletic Program has seen growth in many areas, and our dedicated coaches and students represent Moore Catholic with integrity and pride. The Mavericks will be fielding Varsity and Junior Varsity Football teams this fall, and history will be made as Moore’s first ever Girls Varsity Volleyball team takes the court for CHSAA competition. We received funding to assist in painting the gym, adding volleyball court lines, and purchasing a new volleyball system and red Maverick gym mats for the stage.
Homecoming is the perfect time to return to your alma mater! On Saturday, October 29th, Maverick’s JV Football team will play at 10am and the Varsity team will play at 1pm. After the football game, there will be an Alumni Girls Soccer game at 4pm. The grand finale will be a Performing Arts Show at 7pm. Ticket info and event details will be posted shortly.
For more than 50 years Moore Catholic has been a family unit sharing many fond memories and providing support to one another throughout the years. In the words of Henry Ford, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” Let us continue to be as generous as we can to help the next generation of Moore students.
Always a Maverick,
Gela (Mazella’73) Mikalauskas
Director of Development
