International Student Program
Moore Catholic High School is a college preparatory, co-educational secondary school that has rigorous spiritual, academic, and extracurricular programs designed to develop our student body into young men and women of the highest moral and ethical character. Guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church, we are committed to helping our students realize their fullest potential to become mature, responsible and productive members of society.
International students are an important part of the Moore Catholic High School community. We have a diverse international student population, which includes students from China, South Korea, Vietnam and Italy. International students along with their American friends participate in all aspects of school and community life, from the classroom where they receive a rigorous college preparatory education, to the Athletic field where they participate in a full range of sports, including Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer, to the Performing Arts stage where they can participate in our musical and theatrical productions. Our faculty and staff provide a caring and nurturing environment where the students’ confidence, individual worth and development are of utmost importance.
This program was designed knowing that our international students are far from their homes and families, and may face challenges living in a new country and having to immerse into a new culture. In order to help ease the assimilation process, all international students are mentored by the Director and Coordinator of the International Student Program, who have the overall responsibility of ensuring that our international students experience at Moore Catholic is both enjoyable and productive. The Director and the Coordinator of the International Student Program along with the school’s guidance counselors work individually with each student to select courses, review academic progress, facilitate participation in extracurricular activities, and to discuss their living arrangements. The school also provides individual tutoring and SAT test preparation for college. It also offers students the opportunity to enroll in Advanced Placement courses where they can earn credit for college.
All incoming International Students are required to participate in our English as a Second Language course (ESL), which is designed to assess the needs of each individual student and develop a course of study for which each student could develop his/her proficiency in English in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking in order to succeed in High School and beyond.
Once proficiency is demonstrated, students will then proceed to our English Language Learners class (ELL). The class is a content-based English language program where students learn English in addition to developing their analytical and critical thinking skills through reading and assessing classical works of American Literature.
If the student’s proficiency is above the required level, he/she can opt out of the ESL and/or ELL and be placed in an English class where literature enrichment of the language can be achieved.
