The goal of the Guidance Department, in accordance with the model of the American School Counselors Association, is to assist our students in having the most successful and rewarding high school experience possible – academically, socially, and spiritually.
Counselors are available for individual appointments for academic, personal, and college counseling through the use of Naviance, special software to assist all students with the college application process. In addition, counselors meet with students in a classroom setting to present the following curriculum:
Freshman Year: Aid the students in their adjustment to Moore Catholic. The school handbook is reviewed to make the students aware of what is expected of them. Lessons are taught to review skills, such as note taking, positive study habits, test taking strategies, and time management.
Sophomore Year: Starts with a strong academic focus on PSAT preparation. Using practice tests and web based materials, students will become familiar with the PSAT in time for them to take it in October. Following the PSAT, the curriculum for guidance continues on the journey to post-secondary education. Students will learn about the ACT, various career opportunities, and the importance of a strong GPA. Intermittently, focus may shift toward different social/developmental topics so that students are provided with a well rounded and interesting experience.
Junior Year: Assist the students in developing college and career goals. Both long-term and short-term planning is practiced as students learn to relate to academic studies, extra-curricular activities, and individual preferences for their future. Students begin to explore possible college majors and the college search process. The Junior Guidance Counselor works with the students on a variety of websites, and, in particular, Naviance. These websites help students identify their interests, explore colleges and college majors, research careers, and gain insight into college. The department informs the students of the PSAT, ACT, and SAT registration deadlines and encourages all students to take the exams.
Senior Year: Lead the students through an intensive college search and application process using Naviance. Students are given the latest information on college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid. The students are also prepared for what to expect upon entering college and how they can make the most effective adjustment. Students are provided with individual attention to meet their needs during the college application process. They are assisted in the SAT and ACT testing options and procedures.
